Reading and Speaking on Proposed Amendments

It is a fundamental rule of Robert’s Rules of Order that MEMBERS of an organization have the right to speak at a meeting. Robert's Rules of Order’s purpose is to structure a meeting format that insures the full participation of all members. In fact, members have a responsibility to participate fully in the process of proposing, debating, and voting on amendments to the DKG Constitution and International Standing Rules. Members must be present in New Orleans at the DKG International Convention to exercise your right to speak and vote!

Before you decide if you want to speak, you should carefully read all of the proposed amendments in the March/April (2022) DKG News. You will notice that each proposed amendment contains important information: (1) how the Constitution or ISR reads now, (2) how it is being changed, (3) how it will read if amended as proposed, (4) the proposer’s rationale, and (4) the fiscal impact statement. Considering all together, this information should assist you in determining your position on each proposed amendment. (There will be informational sessions at the convention to answer questions also.)

Why do members decide to speak on a proposed amendment? After studying the proposed amendments, members generally go to the microphones and ask to speak for one of three reasons: they want to speak in favor of the proposed amendment; they want to speak against the amendment; or they have a question requesting clarification on an amendment’s content or a procedural matter. All are important reasons to speak.

It is important YOUR VOICE is heard!
